Posted Apr 24/14 - Royals sweep Dolphins in long weekend battle

Even a steady rainfall and three games in a day couldn’t stop the Douglas College Royals baseball team from sweeping the Shoreline Dolphins this past weekend.

On a wet rainy Saturday at Whalley Ballpark, the Royals were able to get in a game and a half before the rain halted the second game in the 4th inning.

In game 1 of the double header, the Royals were able to come from behind to beat the Dolphins by a score of 6-4.  The big blow for the Dolphins came in the 5th inning where Royals third baseman Jordan Kornberger launched a 3 run homerun over the left field fence.  Jeff Bouchard also helped the offense going 2-4 with 2 RBI’s including a double.  Tyler Yorko also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with a double.  Matt Trimble picked up the win for the Royals going 5 2/3 innings while striking out 8 Dolphin batters.  Eric Kahl picked up the final 4 outs earning his 2nd save of the  year.

In game 2 the Royals sent out Brandon Chernoff to quiet the Shoreline offense and he did just that.  Chernoff was cruising through 4 innings giving up 0 runs, before the field became unplayable and had to be stopped and continued the next day at Shoreline’s field.  The Royals then sent out Jack Bale to continue on Chernoff’s success and he did throwing the final 5 innings of shutout ball to give the Royals baseball team the 5-0 shutout.  It was a more balanced attack for the Royals offensively with 7 different Royals getting hits.  They got RBI’s from Jackson Temple, Brayden Munro, and Colby Rossi.

Game 3 was another close game with Douglas College coming out on top 5-3.  Tanner Robertson led the offense, going 2-3 with a triple and a walk and 3 runs scored.  Temple and Kornberger had 2 hits each with Temple picking up 2 RBI’s as well. Shawn Andersen picked up the win for the Royals going 5 2/3 innings giving up only 2 earned runs.  Josh Yung battled some control issues by getting out of a jam in the bottom of the 6th inning with a fly ball to Robertson in center field to end the inning.  Eric Kahl picked up his second save of the series and third of the year pitching a scoreless 7th inning.

The offense kept the ball rolling in game 4, pounding out 12 hits including 5 extra base hits, leading the Royals to the 8-1 win and a sweep of the Dolphins.  Jared Frew, Garrett Belanger, Mike Orosz, Colby Rossi, and Tanner Robertson had 2 hits a piece with Rossi and Frew picking up 2 RBI’s each.  Robertson, Frew, Munro, Orosz all had doubles with Rossi producing a triple as well.  Jamie Whitehead pitched well again going 6 strong innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits while striking out 5 batters earning the win.  Doug Strohan pitched 2 solid scoreless innings striking out 2, and Brad Fitzsimmons pitched a perfect 9th inning.

A number of program milestones were also achieved on Sunday on top of the three wins, Head Coach Cavanagh Whitely surpassed former coach Josh Ridgeway to become the all-time baseball wins leader at Douglas College in game one (48) and also achieved his 50th win as head coach in game three. The Royals are also only two wins away from breaking the all-time conference win record of 11. Congrats to Coach Whitely for all his hard work and dedication over the past four years and best of luck these next two weekends.

The Royals now sit in 3rd place of the NWAACC North Division with a record of 10-6 just behind Edmonds (14-2) and Bellevue (11-1).  Next up for the Royals Baseball team is Olympic College with a double header slated for Saturday at Whalley with the first game starting at 1 pm.  Then a long bus trip to Bremmerton, WA for another double header against the Olympic College Rangers on Sunday.

Posted Apr 10/13 - Bellevue recap

After a perfect opening weekend, the weather caught up with the Douglas College Royals baseball team.  Games were rescheduled 3 times due to rain, but when the weather finally cooperated, the Royals were able to take the field down in Bellevue on Monday.

Game 1 was a pitching duel in its finest form.  The Royals sent out sophomore pitcher Josh Larsen after his one hit performance against Olympic last weekend and did much of the same against the Bulldogs.  Larsen was the tough luck loser after scattering 4 hits while striking out 3 in his complete game 1-0 loss.  Matt Ney had a 2 hits, including a double and Jordan Kornberger had the only other hit for the Royals.

In game 2 the Royals outhit the Bulldogs, but were not able to top them on the scoreboard, losing another 1 run ballgame 3-2.  Freshman pitcher Quinn Allen gave up 1 run in each of the first 3 innings, but settled down and shut the Bulldog offense after that.  Brandon Bufton and Carter Sherban both had RBI's offensively for the Royals.

On Tuesday, the Royals came home to Whalley where they were able to earn a split for the day.

Game 3 was another pitcher’s duel this time between 2 left handed pitchers, Cory Duggan for the Royals, and Jake Reppert for the Bulldogs.  Duggan, earned a no decision in the game going 6 innings scattering 6 hits and striking out 11 Bulldog hitters, adding to his team leading strikeout total.  With the score tied after 6 innings, Dylan Remenyk provided relief pitching for Douglas College, giving up 1 hit and striking out 1.  In the bottom of the 7th, leadoff hitter Jackson Temple got on with a base hit.  After a wild pitch moved Temple to second base, Shane Wlodarczak moved Temple to third with a groundball to second base, etting up an exciting end to the game.  Tanner Robertson executed a squeeze bunt to perfection bringing home Temple and giving the Royals the 3-2 victory.

With the rain steadily coming down for game 4, the Royals Caleb Lefebvre struggled to find the strike zone consistently walking 6 while giving up 5 hits.  The Royals were only able to muster up 3 hits, coming from Brandon Bufton, Carter Sherban, and Tanner Robertson.  The final score ended up 13-2 in favour of the Bulldogs.

The Royals now sit in 3rd place in the NWAACC North division with a 5-3 record, and an overall record of 8-8.  The Royals have a bye this weekend, but continue conference play next weekend with a double header at home April 20 against Shoreline (0-4), starting at 1:00 pm.  They then travel down to Shoreline for a double header on April 21.

Posted Apr 3/13 - Olympic Recap

The Douglas College Royals baseball team opened their 2013 conference schedule at home to great weather and even better fan turn out (+/- 120) and support this weekend against a much improved Olympic College Rangers squad. After nearly knocking the Royals out of the playoff picture a year ago, revenge was sweet as the DC pitching staff had the most dominant weekend in program history.

Game One featured Sophomore transfer Josh Larsen dominating in his first conference start. Josh held the Rangers hitless until two outs in the 7th when a line drive got by a Royals outfielder for a triple. Larsen went on to strike out the next hitter to preserve the victory. Clutch hits from Tyler Yorko, Brandon Bufton and Carter Sherban sealed the 4-1 victory.

Game Two: FR shortstop Colby Rossi continued his hot hitting with another two hits and starting LHP Caleb Lefebvre gave up only 4 hits while striking out 4 over 6 innings of work. Dan Altoe was great in his 3 innings of relief work to secure the save. Royals 3 - Rangers 2.

The series shifted to Bremerton, WA on the Sunday but the results were very similar from the previous day.

In game 3, FR LHP Cory Duggan pitched the complete game shutout and carried a no hitter into the 6th inning before the Rangers managed a bleeder into left field. He struck out 6 batters to improve his staff lead to 16 K's. Duggan has now also not allowed a run in the 13 innings he has pitched for the Royals this Spring. Offensively, Tyler Yorko led the charge with 3 hits and Brandon Bufton had the game winning RBI to add to his 2 hit performance as well.

Game 4 matched DC power armed freshman RHP Quinn Allen against Olympic's ace Devin Smith. Smith was outstanding in his 8 innings striking out 9 Royals and only allowing 1 run over his 8 innings. Allen bettered him by allowing no runs over his 7 innings behind some great defensive plays by Colby Rossi and Brayden Munro. The Royals 2nd basemen Jared Frew had the best day at the plate with three hits but it was freshman catcher Mike Orosz that had the game winning RBI with a line drive up the middle to plate the winning run. LHP Dylan Remenyk and RHP Carter Sherban notched the hold and save respectively for the 1-0 victory.

The most impressive statistic is the fact that the Royals pitching staff did not give up an earned run in the four game series over the entire weekend. Congrats to all the pitchers and pitching coach Shawn Schaefer on this impressive achievement.

The Royals record now sits at 4-0 in conference (7-5 overall) which is good enough for 1st place in the ultra-competitive NWAACC North Division. This is the first time that the Royals have been at the top of the conference. Colby Rossi leads all regular position players with a .375 batting average over the first 12 games of the season.

Next week's matchup features the Royals travelling to conference powerhouse Bellevue College (1-3) on Saturday but will return to Whalley Stadium on Sunday with a double header against those same Bulldogs starting at 1:00pm.

Posted Jan 30/13 - Jesse Penner Scholarship Fundraising Event

The Douglas College Men’s Baseball team in collaboration with The Bullpen Baseball School are proud to announce the date of this year’s annual Jesse Penner Scholarship fundraising event. On Saturday, February 16th, The Jolly Mac Pub (14817-108 Ave in Surrey) will host an evening in support of student-athlete scholarships for the DC Royals baseball team.

Every year, the Jesse Penner Memorial Award has given opportunities to deserving student-athletes that show exceptional quality of character and community involvement as well as the talent to compete against elite US college competition. These awards help these players pursue their dreams of playing professional baseball as well as completing their degrees at a post-secondary institution.

Jesse Penner was a former student-athlete on the DC baseball team who tragically passed away. His memory is celebrated and his leadership, work ethic, and team loyalty are qualities recognized in those receiving the awards.

Each ticket to this event will cost $25.00 which includes dinner and a drink and will commence at about 6:00pm. There will be a silent auction as well as numerous raffles for sport memorabilia and other events supporting our cause.

For your tickets, please contact Head Coach Cavanagh Whitely at whitelyc@douglascollege.ca or Fred Sabatine from The Bullpen at fredsabatine@shaw.ca

We look forward to seeing you at the event. If for any reason, you or your organization cannot attend, tickets purchased as a donation are very much appreciated. Many of our student-athletes would not be able to represent their college and their country without the community and friendship support. For this, we thank you in advance.

Remember that every donation makes a difference, regardless of size.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Posted May 17/12 - Douglas Secures 1st Ever Regional Birth
It was a great day for the Douglas College baseball team as they captured their first ever Regional birth on home soil this afternoon. It certainly wasn't easy as Douglas lost two close ball games at Olympic College on Sunday while Skagit swept Shoreline to force the one game playoff today at Whalley Stadium, Monday at 2:00pm.

Over the weekend, The Royals held the OC Rangers to only 3 earned run over 22 innings of baseball on Sunday and DC could not get the big hit when they needed it. Olympic College, who was already eliminated from the postseason, played the spoiler role well by playing near perfect baseball and managed to beat Douglas 2-1 (in 12 innings) in game one and 3-1 in game two down in Bremerton, WA. The Rangers made numerous big plays and limited Douglas to only two runs despite the Royals 16 hits over the double header.

Today at Whalley, the Royals had a nightmare start as starter Dylan Remenyk gave up a grand slam with no one out in the first inning. Douglas pecked away at the lead but couldn't stop the Skagit offense as Remenyk was chased in the 3rd after giving up six runs on six hits. Clayton Franco came in on one day rest (103 pitch win Saturday) to limit the damage and held the Cardinals to one run over 3 innings of work.

Shane Kelly, Douglas College Royals Baseball, 2012Down 7-5 in the 7th, the Royals put together a rally that will go down in program lore. DC sent 15 hitters to the plate and managed to score 10 runs on 9 hits. Dan Altoe then came in (also on 1 day rest) and pitched 3 scoreless innings to secure the 15-7 victory. Shayne Kelly was 5 for 6 (with 5 RBI's) and Bryan Arthur, Jeremy Kral, Sheldon Sinnott, James Zamko, and Matt Ney also added 2+ hits each.

It was a proud day at the field and the win was well deserved for the boys after years of hard work. DC will now travel to Bellevue College this weekend to face the host team in a four team double knockout tournament with Bellevue, Edmonds and Everett CC. Two teams (one being Bellevue) will emerge from the tournament and represent the North at the NWAACC championships on May 24th-28th at Lower Columbia College

A New Era for Douglas College Baseball

June 24th, 2010

Cavanagh Whitely named new Head Coach of Douglas College Baseball Program

The Douglas College Centre for Campus Life is pleased to announce that Cavanagh Whitely has been named the Head Coach for the Royals Men’s Baseball Program.

Coach Whitely is a native of Prince George, BC and just completed his 10th season as a part of the UBC Thunderbirds baseball program. He has worked the last 7 years as a specialist coach in charge of infield, offensive systems development, and the Thunderbirds mental skills training program.

From 2004-2010, Whitely served as the full-time assistant to head coach Terry McKaig and was a integral part of UBC’s impressive run to a fourth-place finish at the NAIA World Series in 2006. It was the first time a Canadian team ever competed for a US National Championship. He was also the head of recruiting for the T-Birds, the facility coordinator and head instructor of the Mizuno School of Baseball at UBC, and the organizer for the UBC summer camp program.

Whitely is also highly involved in community baseball programs. The Coaching Association of Canada awarded him a position as a High Performance Consultant with Baseball BC in 2005, and he is currently a coach with both Team BC and the National University team program that competes during the summer. He has coached with Team Canada from 2003- 2006 at the Grand Forks International Baseball Tournament and at the 2008 and 2010 World University Championships. Cavanagh is also an active Baseball BC NCCP level four clinician and evaluator.

“I’m looking forward to taking over the Royals Baseball program here at Douglas College. The NWAACC is a very competitive conference that gives Canadian ball players a great opportunity to showcase their skills. Our goal here will be to develop student-athletes to meet their potential on and off the field and allow them to move on to quality four year programs or even on to the professional ranks.”

As a player, Whitely was recruited by the National Baseball Institute and started his college career at Douglas under Coach John Haar. After two solid seasons there, he transferred and spent three successful years on the UBC squad from 1999-2002, playing every infield position while holding down a career batting average of over .300. Whitely has also spent time in the Australia pro league, playing for the Padres organization in Queensland from 2002 to 2003 while concurrently serving as a Director of Coaching and Development Officer for Baseball Australia.

“Cavanagh brings a wealth of experience and expertise in dealing with student-athletes both as a coach and as a faculty member at Douglas with the Student Success courses.  We look forward in having him bring his knowledge to an already vibrant coaching staff at the College.” stated Dean Howie the Director of Athletics and Campus Life.

Cavanagh currently lives in Vancouver and has his Master’s Degree in Human Kinetics from the University of British Columbia

Douglas College has 9000 students at campuses in New Westminster and Coquitlam. The Men’s Baseball Program program competes in the NWACC.
